Is a full body MOT just a blood test?

Is a full body MOT just a blood test?

Some are. Search for a full body MOT and the cheaper offers are usually a blood sample, taken at home or at a pharmacy, with a report emailed back. If all you buy is a blood test, a blood test is all you get, whatever it is called.

A health screening adds a doctor who examines you, reads your results alongside everything else, takes responsibility for what is found and helps you act on it. Every tier on our Health MOT page includes that, from the £495 Essential upwards.

Two people, the same result

Take two people whose liver test comes back just above the reference range. On a printed report, the two results look identical.

The first is a 34-year-old who ran a half marathon two days earlier and takes no medicines. The second is a 52-year-old with a waist measurement that has crept up, a father with type 2 diabetes, and a borderline HbA1c. A doctor who has examined both and taken their histories will tell them very different things: the first can probably recheck in a few months, while the second has a pattern worth acting on now.

The number is the same. What it means depends on the person, and working that out is the doctor's job.

"A resting ECG is a snapshot of a few minutes. I trust it more alongside your blood pressure, cholesterol and family history."

Prof Darrel Francis, Consultant Cardiologist

The body composition reading uses the Seca mBCA 525, a medical-grade analyser also used at Great Ormond Street and University College London Hospitals. It shows visceral fat, the fat stored around your organs, which predicts heart disease and diabetes better than weight alone.

So is a full body MOT worth it?

It is worth it when it leads somewhere. Screening can find things early, such as raised blood pressure, high cholesterol or blood sugar heading towards diabetes, when changes to diet, activity or medicine make the biggest difference.

It can also find things that turn out to be harmless, and every test has false alarms. That is the strongest reason to have a doctor involved: someone who can tell a borderline number from a real problem, explain it calmly and decide whether anything needs to happen next. Our guide to incidental findings explains how we handle the unexpected.

If you are 40 to 74 and live in England, you are also entitled to a free NHS Health Check every five years, which checks your heart and diabetes risk. A private Health MOT goes further, with a doctor's examination, a broader blood panel and imaging on the higher tiers. Our comparison of the NHS Health Check and a private MOT sets the two side by side.

When a blood test on its own is the right choice

If you want to recheck one known marker, such as a cholesterol level your doctor already follows, a single blood test may be all you need, and our sister service Blood London offers individual tests. When you want to know how you are overall, with a doctor responsible for what is found, choose a Health MOT. Our guide who will review my results? lists the questions to ask any provider, and the limits of at-home testing covers the trade-offs.
