Can a full body MOT detect diabetes and prediabetes?
Written by Mr Stephen LingamReviewed by Dr Mohammad Bakhtiar (GMC 4694470) on

Type 2 diabetes in a father, and a waistband that has been tighter for two years. That is often what sits behind a booking for a 45th-birthday check, from someone who feels perfectly well. The NHS says not everyone with type 2 diabetes has symptoms, which is why a measurement tells you more than a hunch.
A full body MOT can detect both. Every tier measures HbA1c and glucose, and the doctor reads them with your weight, visceral fat, blood pressure, cholesterol and kidney results. The Advanced MOT (£999) adds four GP appointments to follow a result up. The Essential MOT (£495) covers the same diabetes measurements.
Below is what each line of your report tells the doctor, and what happens if a result sits in the borderline zone.
The report lines that speak to diabetes
HbA1c
This is the long view. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the previous two to three months, so one sugary lunch cannot flatter or spoil it. Your report prints it in mmol/mol, and the doctor compares it with the NHS cut-offs for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, then shows you where you sit.
Glucose
Glucose is the reading from the day itself. It can move with what you ate and when, which is why the doctor looks at it beside HbA1c and not instead of it.
Body composition and visceral fat
Every tier includes a full body composition analysis covering BMI, muscle mass and visceral fat, the fat that sits around your organs. Two people of the same weight can carry very different amounts of it, and the figure helps explain a blood sugar result that the scales alone would not predict.
Cholesterol and triglycerides
The lipid profile often moves alongside blood sugar. A raised triglyceride figure next to a borderline HbA1c gives the doctor a fuller picture of how your body is handling fuel.
Kidney function
Kidney tests are part of every package. Kidneys and blood sugar affect each other over the years, so the doctor reads your kidney results with your diabetes lines to see the whole of it. The urine test adds a check for sugar and protein.
Blood pressure and pulse
Taken in the room, these sit on the same page as the blood results. Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol tend to be considered together when the doctor looks at your long-term heart and circulation health.
How the doctor reads them together
No single line makes the diagnosis. The doctor examines you, asks about your family and your habits, and puts the numbers in order of what matters for you. A raised result on the day is a reason to look closer, and the doctor tells you what confirmation is needed.
"HbA1c shows raised blood sugar years before you'd feel anything. It's much better to find it early, when changes to what you eat and how much you move can make a real difference."

The doctor reads a blood sugar finding beside everything else the MOT measures. Our guide to what a full body MOT includes lists it all.
A borderline result: what happens next
Borderline is the most useful result to find, because there is time. The doctor sets out a plan for diet, movement and weight, and suggests rechecking HbA1c after about three months of changes.
With the Advanced, Elite or Ultimate MOT, that recheck sits inside your four GP appointments over the 12 months after screening. They are unlimited in length and you can share them with immediate family, which suits a household where more than one person is watching their blood sugar.
If the doctor wants a specialist opinion, we refer you to someone our doctors know, and we don't charge for the referral.
Questions we hear
Do I need to fast?
The Essential MOT needs no fasting. The Advanced requires a minimum four-hour fast, and you should drink water and wear comfortable clothing.
Is this type 1 or type 2?
The same tests show raised blood sugar in either type. Type 1 tends to start quickly and often younger, while type 2 builds slowly over years, which is why midlife is a sensible time to check.
How often should HbA1c be rechecked?
Your doctor sets the timing from your own result. After a borderline reading, three months of changes is the usual gap before repeating it.
Can I add HbA1c to another test?
It is already in every MOT. If you only want that one measurement, Blood London offers a standalone HbA1c blood test, and our add-on blood tests guide covers extras to an MOT.
