Understanding Your Heart Health Metrics
Heart disease remains a major health concern, but understanding your heart health metrics is the first step towards prevention. Many people are familiar with terms like 'blood pressure' and 'cholesterol', but fewer understand what the numbers actually signify.
Blood Pressure: The Silent Killer
High blood pressure (hypertension) often has no symptoms but can damage your arteries and heart over time. A reading of 120/80 mmHg is generally considered normal. The top number (systolic) measures pressure when your heart beats, while the bottom number (diastolic) measures pressure between beats.
Cholesterol: Good vs. Bad
Cholesterol is a fatty substance in your blood. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is often called 'bad' cholesterol because it can build up in artery walls. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is 'good' cholesterol because it helps remove LDL from your bloodstream.
Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management are key to maintaining healthy heart metrics. If your numbers are out of range, medication and lifestyle changes can help bring them back under control.
